Student Visa

Study, Work & Settle in New Zealand

New Zealand provides pathway to residency for international students. After completion of study, students get post study work visa. They can apply for residency whenever they meet the residency requirements. What? What did you say? Residency Requirements? Yes, if you are willing to settle in New Zealand after study, plan ahead.

Be Careful...

Overseas Education agents may secure a student visa for you but CANNOT advise you on residency. As per New Zealand law, overseas education agents can only help you in student visa. They get commission from Education providers for recruiting students. Sometimes, they mislead the students and focus on their commission only. Sometimes, they advice a student for a wrong course due to lack of knowledge about residency pathway. They do not have knowledge of New Zealand immigration law and hence, are not allowed to provide any advice on any other type of visa including work or residency.

Act Smart...

Licensed Immigration Advisors have thorough knowledge of immigration law and only they are allowed and are capable to give advice on all immigration matters. So, if you have long term plans in New Zealand, talk to a Licensed Immigration Advisor before you enrol in a course and discuss the options which can align with your long term goals.

New Zealand Education...

New Zealand provides world recognised and quality education. The New Zealand government has strong quality assurance systems to ensure  high-quality education at all levels of the education system, both public and private. NZQA ensures that education providers deliver quality education. NZ government also provides protection to tuition fee of international students so that they can study without stress.

     Education System

The New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) has 10 levels and covers a range of qualifications, from certificates to doctoral degrees.

The NZQF levels are:

  • Schooling: levels 1-4, which cover the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) - the main qualification in secondary schools - and basic trades training

  • Undergraduate: levels 5-6, which cover advanced trades, technical and business qualifications. International students who have completed their schooling are eligible for these.

  • Degree levels 7-10, which cover degrees, graduate and postgraduate qualifications. You may take these levels if you are a Bachelor degree holder.

     Education Providers

New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and about 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools.

  • Universities offer higher degree-level education. Programmes are research-led and generally academic rather than vocational. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, seven of New Zealand’s universities were in the top 100 in at least one subject.

  • ITPs and a few larger PTEs offer vocational degree-level education. Their programmes offer job opportunities in commercial establishments.

  • PTEs tend to offer specific vocational programmes, mainly at certificate and diploma level.
